Summer programs for young theatre artists vary widely in experiences. Some are overnight programs in college dormitories, some are during school hours only. I have listed below some popular, well-regarded programs. Drop me a line if I missed one!
The National High School Institute – Theatre Arts Division
NHSI is located on the grounds of Northwestern University in Evanston, IL, just north of Chicago. It is a popular, demanding, and rewarding program for theatre artists about to enter their senior year of high school. There are 10 sixty-minute plays and 2 ninety-minute musicals produced every summer, plus over a hundred different elective and master classes taught by teachers from around the country.
Boston University Summer Theatre Institute
BUSTI is similar to NHSI in its link to a well-regarded university. It is also an overnight, in-dorm housing program with highly structured days. There are fewer final productions and more field trips at BUSTI, but every student gets to audition for BU at the end of their summer if they like.
Another popular program for young actors, Stagedoor embraces the word “camp” and holds no academic affiliation whatsoever. There are a number of famous alumni and a strong reputation for quality summer experiences. Located in the Catskill Mountains of New York.
